WV511 - Know Before You Go!

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin announced the launch of the West Virginia 511 Traveler Information System. West Virginia 511 provides free, real-time traffic information, including congestion, crashes, construction, lane closures, road conditions and severe weather information on all of West Virginia’s interstates and other major highways.

Four Convenient Ways to Know Before You Go

Phone: By dialing 511 from any landline or mobile phone, callers will receive traffic information, event information, road conditions and weather forecasts in addition to transfers to the Department of Tourism and neighboring states’ 511 systems. West Virginia 511 also is updated with public safety alerts, including AMBER and Silver alerts.

Web: The WV511.org website provides an interactive map with the locations of traffic incidents, roadway construction and weather advisories. The map also allows users to view traffic cameras from around the state in addition to showing the location of electronic roadway signs and their current messages.

Mobile App: The free WV 511 Drive Safe mobile app offers drivers audible, hands-free traffic alerts. The app is available for iPhone and Android devices and uses the phone’s speaker and GPS location to provide audible travel advisories in the driver’s vicinity. Twitter: Twitter users can get free traffic updates by following one of the 12 WV 511 Twitter feeds. In addition to a statewide updates, travelers can follow Twitter feeds providing travel updates for a specific Interstate or region of the state. Traffic Information 24 Hours a Day

Traffic information is updated in real time 24 hours a day on the West Virginia 511 system on an ongoing basis as incidents occur and situations change on roadways. Roadway information is collected through a network including:

WVDOT cameras
Roadside sensors
Weather stations
WV State Police incident reports
DOH offices
Citizen reports
WV Courtesy Patrol
WV Parkways Authority

The Transportation Management Center monitors this information and inputs this information into the 511 system to provide up-to-date traffic information around the clock.

Costs of the West Virginia 511 Traveler Information System will be offset by paid sponsorships.
