  • FEMA staff cuts raise concerns for Ohio Valley disaster response (WTOV News 9) - At the start of 2026, the Department of Homeland Security announced a reduction in FEMA disaster response staff, raising concerns about the impact on disaster management in the Ohio Valley. Last Wednesday, 50 contracted employees from FEMA's Cadre of On-Call Response and Recovery (CORE) received termination notices, effective Jan. 2. This reduction affects a small portion of the 8,000-strong workforce, but it has sparked worries at the state and county emergency management levels.

The worst effects, experts say, may not reveal themselves until catastrophe strikes. But in a year marked by three category 5 hurricanes, record summer humidity and heat, and deadly fires and floods, the cracks have already begun to show.
