ReadyWV Joins America’s PrepareAthon Day of Action

 A Nationwide Campaign that helps citizens prepare for disasters

CHARLESTON, W.V.A- West Virginia residents can participate today’s America’s PrepareAthon Day of Action by downloading a new mobile phone application from FEMA which makes emergency information readily accessible at any time.

Having a plan in place and information readily available helps reduce stress and anxiety during emergency situations. For children and families, having information easily accessible about safe evacuation routes, weather warnings, emergency contact information and more can mean the difference between a smooth recovery and long-term emotional consequences. Download the FEMA App today and spread the word using #DontSnapGetTheApp.

The campaign, conducted in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) America’s PrepareAthon Campaign, promotes a single day focus on taking simple steps to be prepared ahead of emergency events. The FEMA App is available for Apple, Android, and Blackberry mobile devices.

While everyone knows it’s important to prepare for emergencies, this simple, easy action brings the basic preparedness information and guidelines right to your fingertips.

“West Virginians are known for their self-reliance. Downloading this FEMA preparedness mobile app is one additional step you can take to protect yourself and your family. Make sure you have emergency information and resources at the ready when the power goes out or snow starts falling” says Director of the West Virginia Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Jimmy Gianato.

The FEMA App provides:

·Alerts from the National Weather Service for up to five locations. 

·A link to upload and share photos of damage and recovery efforts @ Disaster Reporter 

·Custom emergency safety information: Save a custom list of the items in your family’s emergency kit, as well as the places you will meet in case of an emergency.

·Maps of disaster resources: Locate and receive driving directions to open shelters and disaster recovery centers.

·Safety tips: Learn how to stay safe before, during, and after over 20 types of hazards, including floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes.

·Apply for assistance: Easily access DisasterAssistance.gov to apply for federal disaster assistance

To participate in the day of action, West Virginia residents download the FEMA Mobile application which is available on Google Play, the App Store, and Blackberry App World. More information is available at www.ready.wv.gov.
