Dollar General to help rebuild library lost in June 2016 Flood

​ELKVIEW, WV (WOWK) - It's been two years since the June 2016 flood struck the Elk River Area, which forced Clendenin Elementary School to merge with Bridge Elementary School.

The school is now called Bridge-Clendenin Elementary School, and while students, faculty and staff welcomed their new classmates and colleagues with open arms, it has been a tight squeeze.

They are making due, but to provide all students with the proper literacy resources has been a major struggle. However, thanks to one national chain-store, Dollar General, the school received a $20,000 grant from store's Literacy Foundation.

Dollar General and American Association of School Librarians teamed up to present the school with the check through the "Beyond Words" grant program, which will help rebuild the school's library.

The school doesn't really have a library, instead they have a multipurpose room that is used for all arts and extracurricular activities. When the room is being used for something else, the library becomes mobile and wheeled around on a cart going classroom to classroom.

Students are very excited for this opportunity and were shocked when they saw the big check come through their school doors.

Since 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $159 million in grants to schools, libraries and literacy organizations as part of its commitment to increase literacy skills.

The Foundation awards funs to organizations located within a 20-mile radius of a Dollar General store.

The school will break the allotment in two, $6,000 for actual books and the remaining amount to fund for tablets students can read on.
