811 - Pipeline Safety Campaign Begins!

6/10/2013
The US Department of Trainsportation is working together with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to engage in a national education campaign promoting safe digging practices to prevent injuries and deaths associated with incidents from pipelines.

There are 2.5 million miles of pipeline in our nation, and one-third of major pipeline accidents are caused by someone digging and hitting a pipeline by mistake, which can be fatal.

Homeowners often make risky assumptions about whether or not they should get their utility lines marked, but every digging job requires a call. Homeowners should call even if it is small projects like planting trees and shrubs. Digging without calling can disrupt service to an entire neighborhood, harm you and those around you and potentially result in fines and repair costs.

Calling 811 before every digging job gets your underground utility lines marked for free and helps prevent undesired consequences.
