FEMA finalizing request for up to 10,000 service members to support Covid-19 vaccinations

ABC News reports FEMA is seeking as many as 10,000 service members to support administering COVID-19 vaccines. CNN reports a FEMA spokesperson said Wednesday a draft request for assistance between FEMA and DoD to support up to 100 vaccination sites nationwide is close to being finalized. A defense official said they are expecting the request to assist. The article says FEMA announced Wednesday that it has obligated more than $1.2 billion to states, territories and tribes for expenses related to Covid-19 vaccination at 100% federal cost share. FEMA will reimburse local governments for use of their National Guard to respond to Covid-19 and other assistance, in accordance with Biden's memorandum last Thursday.

Homeland Security Today (VA) has published a detailed breakdown provided by FEMA on how the agency has obligated the more than $1.2 billion to governmental partners with vaccination sites, as the agency continues its increased support in the ongoing battle against COVID-19.

Homes Damaged by California Mud Flows; Winds Knock Out Power, Topple Trees

Severe weather in California has left about two dozen homes damaged due to mudslides and more than 400,000 without power in Monterey County as areas experience winds gusts of up to 121 mph. The Weather Channel reports the system is being fueled by an atmospheric river that is expected to stall over the region for the next 24 hours that is part of Winter Storm Orlena. Officials warn the rain could cause fast-moving, deadly debris flows, or mudslides, especially in areas recently scarred by wildfires. The Associated Press reports PG&E has more than 400 crews and nearly 500 electric specialists assessing damage, making repairs and restoring electric service to residential and business customers. AccuWeather says the blockbuster storm is being described as "on steroids" to emphasize the intensity of the event and high winds are expected to last into Friday
