Two Separate Rockslides Close Major Roadways

2/14/2019

MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 2/13/19 @ 7:40 p.m.
Residents and business owners remain affected by major mudslides/rockslides in our region.West Virginia Department of Transportation crews, along with Mingo County workers, worked throughout the day Wednesday to clean up U.S. 52 in Gilbert.

Officials tell us, due to all of the rain, it was no surprise that a mudslide happened. The one in Mingo County occurred late Tuesday night, stretching almost completely across the road and leaving no space for drivers to pass through. Workers also say that the only other way around U.S. 52 is about an hour long, and they’re hoping to get it all cleaned up before Friday.

Surrounding businesses tell us that as long as the road is closed, their businesses will be seriously impacted. Chastity Stewart, owner of Giovanni’s Pizza in Gilbert, says there’s no way for her customers on the other side of U.S. 52 to access her restaurant. She said she expects to have a slow next couple of days.
