Melting Snow Leads to Minor Flooding in the Eastern Panhandle

​MARTINSBURG — The Eastern Panhandle received several inches of snowfall within the past few weeks, causing some small flooding to occur in low-lying areas across the region. According to the National Weather Service, a storm passing through the area Saturday into Sunday was expected to drop 2 to 4 inches of snowfall and sleet, including greater than a quarter inch of ice.

A forecaster at the NWS said on Tuesday that they could not access the final accumulation numbers or previous forecast information due to the government shutdown. Nearly a foot of snow fell in Martinsburg Jan. 12-13 and 9 inches accumulated in Shepherdstown, according to NWS data provided to The Journal for a story published last week. And the precipitation is expected to continue.

Residents of the Panhandle can prepare for an inch or more of rain leading up to Thursday night, according to the NWS.Temperatures are expected to rise slightly to the low 30s and 40s within the next two days. However after Thursday night, temperatures will plummet to freezing during some parts of the day.
