Charleston to Open Warming Centers Sunday and Monday

​The city of Charleston, with the help of local agencies, will open two warming centers this weekend in anticipation of temperatures that may dip into the single digits.In a news release, Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said the Salvation Army at 301 Tennessee Ave., on the city’s West Side, would be open as a shelter from 9 p.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday, and from 9 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday. The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on Donnally Street will be open on Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Goodwin said she had directed city departments to work with the United Way of Central West Virginia, the Kanawha Valley Collective and local fire departments, as well as the Salvation Army, Prestera Center, YWCA/Sojourners Shelter, Roark Sullivan Lifeway Center and other community organizations.Temperatures of near 10 degrees in Charleston are forecast for Sunday night, with high temperatures not expected to climb much above the low 20s on Monday.
